We recommend washing the cover before the first use, to soften the fabric and for a fresh start. Remove the cover from the insert and machine wash and dry with your regular laundry with similar colors. Cold water, mild detergent, and medium heat in the dryer will keep it in good shape longer, but you don't need to complicate your life with special treatment of pillow covers. It's cotton, it'll be fine.
The surface of the Nesting Pillow and Nest Egg can be spot cleaned with warm water and mild detergent on a cloth, and/or sprayed with white vinegar. Allow it to dry in full sun or tumble in the dryer with a wet hand towel for about 20-30 minutes on medium heat to sanitize, plump, and remove dust. It's a good idea to do this periodically, just NEVER immerse the insert in water, or put it in the washing machine, or the buckwheat hull filling will turn to mush (experience speaking).
If/when it becomes saturated with fluid (pee, milk, spit-up, etc.) DON'T WORRY! Just wash the cover and wipe the insert off the best you can with a soapy cloth, spray it with white vinegar, and throw it in the dryer. You can add a few drops of essential oil, but it's not totally necessary. The surface may be left with some discoloration, but we like to think of this as "patina" rather than "stains". It'll be clean, and you'll have embarked on the all-consuming part of parenting that nobody warns you about... waste management. It'll be okay, I promise. (If you're in a season where this happens often, you can place a waterproof pad or even a hand towel between the cover and the insert, to make cleanup a little easier. Also, remember that seasons don't last forever, even when they feel like they will at 3 a.m. It won't always stink, really.)
